TRANSFER STUDENTS
Admission of transfer students is done on a
competitive basis. The requirements listed below should be considered the bare
minimum and do not necessarily guarantee admission. Other factors, including
high demand for transfer admissions, may apply. You are a transfer student if
you enrolled at any postsecondary institution after earning a high school diploma
or GED. If you have earned less than 24 credit hours at another college or university
prior to transferring, KU’s admission decision will be based on both your
college and high school work.
To qualify for admission, all transfer students
from community colleges or four-year institutions should have an overall college
grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students who have been admitted
to the university may enroll at another college or university while they are
still in high school or in the summer preceding their entrance to KU without
affecting their admission status. For more information see Undergraduate
Admissions Requirements.
Application procedure
Prospective transfer students should fill out
an Undergraduate
Application for Transfer Admission and Scholarships.
Completed applications should be submitted by February 1 for
fall admission and by December 1 for spring admission. The admissions office
must have an official transcript from each college or university attended, a
list of any courses currently in progress, and ACT or SAT scores. A completed
application includes:
Admission application
$30 (U.S.) application fee
Official college transcript(s)
Official high school transcript (if you have earned fewer than 24 college credits)
Official ACT or SAT scores (if you have earned fewer than 24 college credits)
Once a student's completed application is received, he or she will receive a
letter of decision from the Office of Admissions and Scholarships usually within
three to four weeks.
Scholarships
The University of Kansas offers a wide variety
of programs to students who need financial assistance. For information, see
University
of Kansas Scholarship Opportunities.
Students who have at least a 3.25 grade point
average are eligible to be considered for transfer scholarships. For information,
see Undergraduate
Admission Scholarships and Aid.
Transfer of credit
KU accepts and will place on a student’s
permanent KU transcript all academic courses taken at a college or university
accredited by a regional accrediting body, such as the North Central Association
of Colleges and Schools, which accredits KU. Evaluation of transcripts from
other colleges and universities in the United States is done in the Admissions
Office in Strong Hall. Evaluation of university work taken at a foreign school
is evaluated in the International Student Office. Transfer students should have
a “final” transcript sent to the Admissions Office after completion
of the final semester at the school(s) from which they are transferring.
Not all courses may be applied to fulfill degree
requirements within the School of Engineering. Vocational and remedial courses
are excluded. In addition, a student will not receive degree credit for:
- Courses awarded a grade lower than "C," or
- Specialized engineering sciences and courses in engineering
design unless taken from an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology.
- Credits for English Composition at a foreign institution
of higher education.
Transfer credit in engineering science and
engineering design from institutions accredited by the Accreditation Board of
Engineering and Technology and from institutions with which KU has approved
articulation agreements may be applied toward the degree as appropriate in the
particular engineering curriculum. Transfer credit in engineering from other
institutions must be evaluated and validated on a case-by-case basis.
Credits from courses completed at the secondary
level, whether from U.S. or foreign schools, are not added to a student's official
record unless the student obtains college credits through one of the three examination
programs offered by the University of Kansas: (1) the College Entrance Examination
Board's Advanced Placement test, (2) KU's own credit by examination program,
or (3) the College Level Examination Program. No credits are given for Canadian
Thirteenth or Taylor's College.
No more than 64 credit hours can be transferred
from a community college. You must complete your last 30 credit hours at KU.
Grades of D are not accepted for transfer credit. The Office of Admissions and
Scholarships and the KU School of Engineering conduct a thorough review of your
college credits upon your admission to KU. Before enrollment, you will be made
aware of what credits were accepted by KU and how they will apply toward your
degree requirements. Only transfer students who have been admitted to KU receive
an official credit evaluation.

will transfer to KU, please reference the Transfer
Equivalency Web-Site.
